This part of my journey took me to Cannes and Nice. Cannes was once a small fishing village, but now it is
one of the most popular a glamorous and expensive social hubs in Europe. May is popular in Cannes where it hosts the Cannes Film Festival where fans can see celebrities, actors and directors up close. I would have loved to spend more time at the beach, but it wasn't quite summer weather for me yet. Mid 60's isn't warm enough for me to get into my most revealing swimwear like the French do. I decided to head to the Plage de la Croisette beach because it is close to the center of town. After a short visit to the beach, I had a light lunch at a bistro and then took a ferry to Ile Ste-Marguerite where 'Man in the Iron Mask' was imprisoned. I got to visit his cell and everything! I'm ready to check into my hotel and I might finish off the night and try my luck at a casino!
After a day in Cannes I'm ready to take on Nice. Nice is the Riviera's largest city. I'm going to start my day by checking into my hotel. Because money is no object here, I am going to stay at the Hotel Martinez where actors, presidents and visiting royalty stay.
After checking in, I'm going to take a stroll down through the Vieille Ville, or Old Town. As I was walking along the Promenade des Anglais looking at shops, there were several vendors selling a local speciality snack called socca. I decided to give it a try. Socca is a round crepe made with chickpea flour and sold steaming hot. It tasted fair, not a favorite of mine.
I had the afternoon to go sightseeing so I set out to visit the Chapelle du Rosaire where Henri Matisse created a masterpiece for Dominican nuns.
I decided to splurge for dinner and dine at Le Tire Bouchon. It is in the center of Nice and would be just the perfect place to enjoy a gourmet meal. Until next time...Au Revoir!
